The Evil Eyes Are Watching You

with one comment

Spending a weekend in Baku presents a lot of different opportunities than what I’m used to in Lənkəran.  Besides things like coffee shops and the Peace Corps offices and the feel of an international city, it also sports a prominent Ultimate Frisbee team!  For those of you not familiar with the sport, the ever-reliable Wikipedia  provides.  Our fellow non-Azerbaijanis in Baku have started a group called the Evil Eyes, getting together for games at the Azerbaijan International University sports center.  It’s a cool building that has Sport written across it.  It’s a cool enough building to even have a guy out front who was shoveling the snow and ice away from the entrance.

Sean and I left the Peace Corps lounge by taxi, and after about 15 minutes in a taxi with a guy who spoke great english, featuring a series of spin-outs on the icy roads, we arrived at the sports complex and met up with 13 other folks, some Peace Corps, others from other companies and organizations.  We split up into teams of five and played games to three.  We had a solid 2.5-3 hours of running up and down in the huge gym.  It actually served pretty well for our purposes.  It was big and just the right size for 5-person teams.

Some quick details: 1) After game one, my team managed to win every game from there on out.  We we’re awesome.  2) I think our winning ways were probably from the spandex I was sporting.  This is the first time I broke out the red running tights and my red spandex running top.  I even had a red hat to go with it.  Accented with black shorts, I was a flash across the indoor “field”.
