Azerbaijan is Participating in the 2010 Olympics
You might not know it judging by the Azerbaijan National Olympic Committee website, but they are there, flashing the the spirit of the Land of Fire. In fact, there are two athletes in the Vancouver Games, and you can check them out here. Gaia and Jedrij are alpine skiers, which is appropriate, since they come from a Caucasus country. On the opening night, I’m told they also sported some snazzy uniforms.
What is interesting, however, is that the amount of Olympic Complexes in Azerbaijan is through the roof. Every region that I have been to features a shiny, seldom-used Olympic Complex. It sounds like we are now up to 24 such complexes in the Republic. Imagine having that many in a place the size of Maine. They generally cater more to the Summer Olympics sports, but I don’t see any reason why they can’t build a skating rink for things like hockey or figure skating. It probably has more to do with most Azerbaijanis’ perpetual fear of cold things.
