Hillary Came to Visit On My Birthday
Not everyone can say that Hill dropped in on their temporary developing country home for their birthday. I can, though. She joins the parade of world leaders and celebrities flocking to Baku. Hillary arrived this morning in Baku, meeting with our favorite president, the Foreign Minister of Azerbaijan, and the OSCE Minsk Group Co-chairs (the people in charge of leading Nagorno-Karabakh negotiations). She’s in town not only to wish me a happy birthday, but also to encourage cooperation in solving violent international conflict in the region. Apparently, expectations are high for just a 1-day fly-by:
“I think that the U.S. authorities are aware of Azerbaijan’s importance, and from this point of view, we can expect that during U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s visit to Azerbaijan, our cooperation will reach a new level of development,” Mammadov said on July 1.
Good luck, Hill. Happy 234th Birthday, United States of America!
Update: Not only are the Azerbaijani news agencies on the story, but while listening to Morning Edition on NPR this afternoon (thanks, live-streaming radio on the Internet) we also heard about Hillary’s trip here from Liane Hansen. Liane informed us that Hillary encouraged youth to speak out for change and increase media freedom in Azerbaijan. Way to go, Azerbaijan, you were on NPR!
