Just another blog about Azerbaijan.

It’s time for a bike ride, folks.  I won’t be embarking on the journey from Bakı to Gəncə, but I know a few volunteers who will.  In celebration of the Year of the Environment, a bunch of ministries are getting together to organize a bike tour.  I don’t know how much this is going to help improve environmental anything here in Azerbaijan, but at least there are some folks who’ll get a good bike ride out of it.  From Today.Az:

Holding the tour by bicycle, which is considered environmentally clean transport mean, can be a contribution to environmental protection.

Cycling tour is the first event of the initiative “Cycle Week in Azerbaijan”.

Similar tours will be organized in the future.

I hadn’t known it would be Cycle Week, either.  And the prospect of future bike rides is intriguing.  Also, I’m interested to hear if while biking, those folks toss their trash along the side of the road, like you would if you were an Azeri in a vehicle.  (Please forgive my cynicism)

Last, my fellow PCV Jeff is going to be doing the ride and he sent me part of their itinerary.  It looks like Day 2 from Bakı to Şamaxı, a 75-mile ride, is supposed to be done between 9am and 2pm.  I don’t know who they’re riding with, but I hope everyone is in shape, because that’s a fairly good pace, and the road from Bakı to Şamaxı is all up-mountain, not to mention replete with Azeri drivers.  Good luck, cyclists!
