Jobs for Bookies

leave a comment »

Recent developments are showing that Azerbaijan is taking an interest in the welfare of bookies.  Unemployment is pretty high in Azerbaijan, so I’m sure this venture will provide many needed jobs:

Bookmaker activity will be officially presented in Azerbaijan on Jan.18, Azerbaijani Youth and Sport Ministry Spokesman Samaya Mammadova told Trend today.

Azinteltek, which is engaged in this, has prepared post-terminals and conducted training on the management of this equipment.

…The Azerbaijani Premier League’s games are planned to be included in the Tote.

On Aug. 23, 2010, the Azerbaijani Cabinet of Ministers identified the share of funds from the activities of sports totalizators directed towards the development of physical culture and sports in the country.

I’m not sure what it means to develop ‘physical culture’, but it sounds like this will lead towards emphasis on sports and athletics.  Interestingly, this will be one of the few methods of gambling that are allowed in Azerbaijan.  And that gambling is being legalized at all is interesting, too.  In 1998, the current president’s father outlawed gambling in Azerbaijan because of his son’s addiction to casinos.
