A Sunday Poem, Mother’s Day Edition

leave a comment »

In honor of Mother’s Day, a poem by Bəxtiyar Vahabzadə:

My Mother

She is illiterate.
She cannot write her name-my mother.

But she taught me how to count.
She taught me the names
of the months and years,
And most importantly,
She taught me language-my mother.

I tasted joy
And unhappiness
With this language.
And I created every poem
Of mine
And every melody
With this language.

Without it
I am nobody;
I am a lie.
The creator of my work,
In all its volumes and volumes,
Is my mother.

Thank you, Mom. Happy Mother’s Day

And now the Azeri version…

Mənim Anam

Savadsızdır
Adını da yaza bilmir
Mənim anam
Ancaq mənə
Say öyrədib
Ay öyrədib
İl öyrədib
Ən vacibi dil öyrədib
Mənim anam
Bu dil ilə tanımışam
Həm sevinci
Həm də qəmi
Bu dil ilə yaratmışam
Hər şerimi, hər nəğməmi,
Yox mən heçəm, mən yalanam
Kitab kitab sözlərimin
Müəllifi: Mənim anam
